MaryJoh C. Hughes was born in Salem, Illinois to Wyett H. and Nila (Powell) Colclasure on November 2nd, 1947 and passed away to be with her Savior on July 14, 2021. She spent her early years of life in Marion County before studying at Murray State University in Murray, KY where she met her much beloved husband, Charles (Charlie) Hughes. Their early married life was spent in Charlie’s hometown of Trenton, KY before moving to Washington County, IL in 1972. MaryJoh earned a triple Bachelors from Murray State University in 1969 in British Literature, Geography, and Art. She later earned a Masters in Teaching and Curriculum from Rockford University in 2000 and a Masters in Curriculum and Instruction from Grand Canyon University in 2008. She leaves behind a legacy of teaching and students from Sandoval where she taught English and Art for twenty years. She spent years enjoying making music with the Kaskaskia College Band where she played the Contra Bass Clarinet. MaryJoh leaves behind her husband of 53 years, Charles W. Hughes of Ashley, IL and her three loving children: Charles W. (Kathy) Hughes II, Martha (Bobby) Hinson of Denver, NC, and Rodger (Julie) Hughes of Mt. Vernon, IL. In addition she leaves behind two granddaughters, Kelley (Logan) Beasley of Central City, IL, and McKenzie Hughes of Mt. Vernon, IL. Also her older brother, Wyett H. Colclasure II and wife Virginia of Salem, nephew Christopher L. (Jen) Colclasure of Denver, CO and niece Retha J.(Mark) Mattern of Bismarck, ND. Services for MaryJoh will be at Calumet Street Christian Church, Centralia, IL on Tuesday, July 20, 2021. Visitation will be at the church from 9-11am with celebration of life at 11am. Burial will follow at Sutton’s Point Cemetery, Oskaloosa, Clay County, Illinois. In lieu of flowers we ask that contributions be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Society so that they can continue their work towards a cure.
