Obituary of Nellie Hiestand
Nellie Hiestand, age 91 of Salem, passed away on Tuesday, July 30, 2024 at Salem Township Hospital with her family by her side.
Nellie was born on August 15, 1932 in Meacham Township at her grandma Chasteen’s home, the daughter of Glen and Dola (Chasteen) Brasel. She married Sam on December 17, 1950 in Alma Township and after 71 years united in marriage he preceded her in death on October 21, 2022.
Survivors include her children: Dennis Hiestand (Linda), Joanne Luttrell (Bill), Jean Jones (Randy), and Mark Hiestand (Connie); son-in-law, David Bookhout; 13 grandchildren; 34 great grandchildren; eight great-great grandchildren; two sisters, Clara Deadmond and Linda Robb (Maurice); and a sister-in-law, Nancy Brasel.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Glen and Dola; her husband, Sam; a daughter, June Bookhout; and two brothers, Denton and James Brasel.
Nellie was a dedicated member of the Kinmundy First United Methodist Church and was actively involved with the Eastern Star for many years. She had a passion for cooking, renowned for her delicious cinnamon rolls, chocolate chip cookies, and coconut pie. Nellie also loved embroidery and quilting, creating heartfelt quilts for each of her family members.
She attended Sherman Grade School and graduated as the Salutatorian and DAR recipient from Kinmundy High School. After graduating, Nellie worked as a secretary at Kinmundy Grade School for several years before becoming co-owner of Buttons and Bows in Salem. Nellie cherished her role as a farmer's wife, spending countless hours supporting her husband, Sam, on their family farm.
Services to celebrate the life of Nellie Hiestand will be held on Sunday, August 4, 2024 at 3:00 p.m. at the Kinmundy United Methodist Church with Pastor Carol Rudzinski officiating. Burial will follow at Summit Prairie Cemetery in Salem. There will be a visitation held on Sunday at the church from 1:00 p.m. until the time of the service. Memorial contributions can be made to the Summit Prairie Cemetery and will be received at the church or at Crouse Funeral Home in Salem who is assisting the family with arrangements.
