Ellis “Sonny” Goostree, age 88 of Salem, passed away on Wednesday, February 26, 2020 at Twin Willows Nursing Center in Salem. Ellis was born on October 21, 1931 in Stevenson Township, the son of Ellis and Helen (Bryant) Goostree. He married Katherine (Gaston) Goostree in August of 1951 in Salem and she survives in Salem. In addition to his wife, “Sonny” is survived by a daughter, Becky Hall and husband Joe of Salem; a son, James Goostree and significant other Debbie Scarborough of Salem; son-in-law, Michael Pannell; six grandchildren, Bryce Goostree, Kylie Goostree, Breanna Goostree, Tammy Staton, Stephanie Conner and Chad Sporleder; several great-grandchildren; several great-great grandchildren; one nephew, Gary; one niece Cindy and one brother-in-law, Randy Gaston and wife Nancy of League City, Texas. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by maternal grandparents, Otto and Pearl Bryant; paternal grandparents, Earl and Ora Goostree; one son, Todd Goostree, one daughter, Bonnie Pannell; one sister, Melba Jean Warlow; one brother, Jack Goostree and one aunt, Sarah Thornberry and many relatives and friends. “Sonny” worked as a warehouse manager for Dover Norris Pipe and Supply on Rt. 37 South for over 30 years. He was a member of the General Baptist Church in Salem. He was a humble man with few needs, content with what he had. He enjoyed cutting wood, gardening, mowing, being outside and spending time with his family. Funeral Services for Ellis “Sonny” Goostree will be held on Saturday, February 29, 2020 at 1:00 pm at Crouse Funeral Home in Salem with Lloyd Slater officiating. Visitation will be from 11:00 until the time of service. Interment will follow at Paradise Cemetery. Memorials can be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and will be accepted at Crouse Funeral Home.
