Charles Larry Ritter, age 77 of Kinmundy, left his earthly home on November 5, 2020 to be at his new home with his Lord and Savior. Larry was born on February 20, 1943 in Marion County, in the area that is now Forbes State Park. He was born to Charles “Mont” and Velma “Willadene” (Shaffer) Ritter. He married Phyllis Baker on January 25, 1964 and they enjoyed 56 years of loving marriage, and she survives in Kinmundy. In addition to his wife Phyllis Ritter, he is survived by one son, Charles Deon Ritter and wife Nancy of Kinmundy; two daughters, Crenda Bottorff and husband Todd of Roachdale, IN and Patrina Boone and husband Chad of Kinmundy; three brothers, Keith Ritter and wife Wilma of Kinmundy, Allen Ritter and wife Karen of Xenia, and Kevin Ritter and wife Becky of Heyworth; grandchildren, Charles Drake Ritter, Bailey Ritter, Drew Bottorff, Olivia Bottorff, Logan Boone, Landen Boone, and Lincoln Boone; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister-in-law, Eva Baker Yates; and brother-in-law, Don Yates. Larry attended Brown Grade School and graduated from Kinmundy-Alma High School in 1961. Besides FFA his other activities growing up included helping his father on the farm, hunting, playing cards with buddies and traveling throughout the country. Larry went to electronic school in Louisville, KY. While in college he worked was employed in Kinmundy at a filling station owned by Bud Robenet. After graduation, Larry was employed at General Electric Plant in Decatur and lived with his Aunt Anna May Ritter. When the plant closed, he began working at Humco in Champaign. After that he worked at a filling station. One of Larry’s many activities included City Treasurer from May 1, 1965 through April 30, 1977. With the threat of war, Larry enrolled in the National Guard from January 9, 1966 until January 9, 1972. On October 4, 1969, Larry and Phyllis purchased the carwash owned by Louis O’Dell. At an earlier time, the building was a blacksmith and horse stable in the booming town of Kinmundy. In the early 1970’s, Larry and Phyllis became active members at Kinmundy Christian Church. One June 11, 1976, Larry graduated from the banking program at SIU-Carbondale. As the early 80’s approached, Larry became interested in selling real-estate and received his license in April of 1980. Larry and Phyllis bought the trailer park located on the east side of town, which they owned from August 12, 1980 through September 14, 1985. Larry started as a bookkeeper at The First National Bank of Kinmundy on May 1, 1964 and advanced to assistant cashier. He retired on December 31, 2007 as Vice President and cashier. Larry was also a trustee at Phillips Cemetery in Kinmundy. Over the last several years, Larry and Phyllis have purchased several hundreds of acres of land for farming and hunting around the Kinmundy area. The past few years Larry has spent his spare time rebuilding old tractors. His first rebuilt tractor was a 1947 B International. Other enjoyments include farming, wood working, coin collecting, deer and turkey hunting, traveling, and spending time with his family. Throughout the years, Larry has been a great influence on his children and on the small community of Kinmundy. Serving for more than twenty years as an elder at church, his faith and love in Christ has grown. His life as a Christian along with knowledge and experience has proven him to be a wise businessman. Through his love and patience as a father, he has instilled in his children and grandchildren perseverance, and faith in God. A private service will be held for Charles Larry Ritter. Interment will be in Phillips Cemetery in Kinmundy. Military Rites will be accorded at the cemetery by the Salem American Legion. The services will be recorded and available to view Thursday afternoon on the funeral home’s website.
