Obituary of Harriet Hood
Harriet “Suzy” (Temple) Hood, age 79 of Salem, was greeted in Heaven with open arms. She passed from this life on Thursday, January 7th, 2021 at her home surrounded by her loving family.
Suzy was an incredible woman who left a lasting positive impact, sharing her love for family, friends, loved ones, and even strangers. She moved many hearts, minds and souls with her generosity and compassion. We will miss her – from her hugs to her smile that would light up a room. Every time you have the chance give someone a hug!
Suzy was born on September 28, 1941 in Centralia, the daughter of Harry Carter and Sally (Bible) Temple. She married Ronald “Ron” Bryan Hood on January 29, 1967 at the Salem Presbyterian Church and he preceded her in death on August 5, 2013.
Suzy is survived by one son, Bryan Temple Hood and wife Tracy of Salem; one daughter, Kristen Temple Wilkins and husband Kirk of Iuka; six grandchildren, Allie, Maddi, and Carter Hood, Kameron and Kaitlyn Wilkins, and Monte Ferrero; one sister Sally Jane Temple of Chicago; and several special cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and one sister, Janis Temple.
Suzy lived much of her life in her hometown of Salem, IL. She attended and graduated from Stevens College in Columbia, MO. in 1961.
Suzy was active in her community. She was a member of Salem Grace United Methodist Church where she contributed to the different ministries of the church. Suzy served as the first woman board member on the Raccoon School Board. She was the co-founder of the I CARE program for area schools. She was on the Salem Community High School Academic Foundation Board and started the Power of Positive Thinking for Teens program at SCHS. Suzy also, was a member of the Salem Area Aquatics Foundation, the Marion County YMCA Board, and she was an honorary Guideposts Cabinet Member. She was the recipient of the 2016-2017 Elks Distinguished Citizenship Award.
In addition to working with and enjoying her family, Suzy said, “The best thing is that we all live in Salem and I get to be a part of their lives.” In fact, Suzy was very fortunate to be able to continue working in her family business, as member of the Board of Directors for Shakespeare Oil Company Inc.
Due to COVID restrictions at this time, a private family service will be held at Crouse Funeral Home in Salem. Burial will follow at East Lawn Cemetery in Salem. There will be a Celebration of Life Service held at the Grace United Methodist Church in Salem on September 4, 2021. Memorials can be made to Grace United Methodist Church, Marion County YMCA, or the SCHS Academic Foundation and will be accepted at the Crouse Funeral Home in Salem who is assisting the family with arrangements.
