Geraldine “Jerri” Newport went to be with the Lord at 2:40 p.m. on Monday, January 6th at Brook Knoll Village in Avon, Indiana with family members near her side. She was born in Alma, Illinois on November 7, 1934 the daughter of Philip and Genelle Allen Aldrich. On October 12, 1952 she married Tom A. Newport at Young’s Chapel Christian Church in Salem. She was a member of Salem Baptist Church and loved to worship and be with friends. Her favorite times were being with family, camping, laughing and playing bridge and bingo with her dear friends. She was well known for the beautiful quilts she designed and won multiple awards for them. In the 1970’s she created a business in Alma, Illinois called “The Yarn Barn” and through her success moved her business to Salem, Illinois where she eventually retired. Survivors include: her daughter Nita Newport of St. Petersburg, Florida. Her three sons Marty and Cheri Newport of Hernando, Mississippi; Ken Newport of Indianapolis, Indiana; Danny and Kristin Newport of Avon, Indiana. Seven grandchildren that she deeply loved: Caelyn Newport, Michael Newport, Courtney Newport, Brittney Newport, Kaley Newport, Rachel Newport and Danielle Newport. Funeral services for Geraldine “Jerri” Newport will be held on Saturday January 11, 2020 at 12:30pm at the Crouse Funeral Home in Salem, with Dr. Andy DeWitt officiating. Burial will follow at East Lawn Cemetery in Salem. There will be a visitation held from 11:00am until the time of the service.
